, president obama and house speaker john boehner sat down at the white house yesterday. they talked. so let's bring in brianna keilarment she is live in washington. so congress is scheduled to break for the holidays later this week. where do we go from here? how are these talks? >> we don't know. that's the thing. we know they spoke. in fact, it's somewhat remarkable that both the white house and speaker boehner's office put out statements simply saying that the two men had spoken. the lines of communication are open. and they were the same verbatim. that is something you can look at as some progress, perhaps. certainly it is promising may be the better way to put it. there is coordination there. they seem to be talking in good faith, trying to keep, i guess, their cards very close to the vest. and that is something that maybe is seen as promising. again, there is no word on actual progress on the fact that they're closer to a deal. and officially at this point, house republicans are still unwilling to bend to the president's demand that those income tax rates for wealthier americans increa

's so much speculation about sunday's meeting at the white house. president obama and john boehner, mano y mano, eric cantor wasn't there nobody else in the room with him. and what does it mean, if anything? >> i think it means that they're at least talking and neither of them came out afterwards and said, you know, we're -- there's no chance for a deal. i think the less we hear in terms of a deal being made, the better. the fewer the leaks the fewer the complaints. the more the likelihood we get a fiscal cliff agreement at some point. there's still obviously the chance we go off the cliff. i think that's pretty unlikely to come to some arrangement on the tax increases. offset by entitlement reforms. the big question is what would democrats agree to and can the president bring them all along? he had that conversation with harry reid from air force i yesterday, i believe. which is significant in the sense that if we believe he's now trying to craft some sort of compromise deal, the democrats will accept, that

are serious about pulling a repeat of 2011, obama can't ignore them. since it will wreck immediate havoc on the economy. white house wants at the very least a long-term extension of the debt ceiling in any fiscal cliff deal. the republicans now see the debt ceiling as their own leverage. they're demanding a steep price to include it. who anyways if obama will ultimately go along with something like this. but it is a talk that there is still one crucial way he's at the mercy of republicans. it leaves him with a tough choice. to pay their price in entitlements or play debt ceiling chicken with them again. okay. does it for "the cycle" today.
